Have you smelled your roses?
Stop and smell the roses…. a term commonly used to reference relaxation; to take time out of one’s busy schedule to enjoy or appreciate the beauty of life.
The urban dictionary defines “slow down and smell the roses” as an admonition to stop stressing out, overthinking or complaining. Put your troubles in perspective and try to enjoy your life. Easier said than done in these times of COVID-19 I’m sure. Nevertheless we have to try. We have to filter through the news and social media long enough to instinctively know the importance of hitting the refresh button, take a couple of deep breaths, and find the beauty in our lives. We must make the time for ourselves to recharge and rejuvenate our state of mind, slowing down the rat race we have grown accustomed to. I had become so robotic in my day to day activities, that I have just floated through some of life’s really meaningful moments. By not taking time for ourselves, we become more stressed, more detached, more agitated, more dissatisfied, more angry, and ultimately more unhappy.
I am happily married and a working mother of a busy 6 year old. Between homeschooling, lunch, afternoon activities, etc.,I have taken the time to make myself a priority. I decided to build this website, which is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done because I am not tech savvy at all. However, I felt the need to contribute my feelings and talents to those like minded women who have been laid off, or just feel unproductive during this shelter in place. Make the most of this moment and do something you’ve never done. Finish the incomplete, or challenge yourself to a goal that you once thought of as a dream; or do nothing. Purge and organize your closets, find the lids to your tupperware, open a cooking app and create your own fine dining experience. Binge watch that show you have been hearing so much about, sleep in, read that book you have been carrying around for the last 8 months. Don’t let anyone guilt you on how you use your free time. Just do something that puts your needs and desires FIRST! At this time in our lives, it’s even more essential to keep a gratitude journal. It’s as simple as writing down just 3 things you are grateful for each day. This will not only keep your foot on the devil’s neck, but it will keep you focused on your positive well being. Anxiousness of the past and the future will leave you feeling overwhelmed and out of control. Stop, breathe, and recenter yourself to a positive reality. You got this! By creating a daily gratitude habit, you are allowing yourself to slow down and smell the roses. In addition to writing in your personal journal, write a note of gratitude to your spouse, partner, family member, or friend letting them know how much you appreciate them. Take a 5-10 minute walk in the morning to awaken senses, meditate, or practice quiet contemplation. Discover your individual practice of emotional well being.
Each of us has a choice to make when it comes to prioritizing our self awareness. I hope you find the time to recognize your amazing greatness and the unique gifts you possess and contribute to this world. Make the choice to be cognizant daily and smell the sweet flowers that are all around you.
